Let’s admit it. If your hair isn’t working, so many other things in life can suffer. Sad, but true.
For women who are losing their hair or find it thinning – due to chemotherapy, thyroid disease, stress, hormones or just genetics — it can be traumatic.
“Sometimes hair loss is permanent, sometimes it’s temporary,” says Irene Bitsiaras, a hair stylist at Charles Ifergan in Deerfield. “Either way, it’s very stressful and scary. I do whatever I can to help them through this problem.”
More and more women are turning to hair extensions to cope with hair loss or thinning hair.
Hair extensions are an option depending on where the hair loss is, says Bitsiaras. Hair loss typically occurs on the sides of the head and at the crown. “I can fill in some of the sides with hair extensions to make it look fuller,” says Bitsiaras. But if you’re losing hair at the crown she recommends a weave or a hair piece, so there’s not so much weight at the root.

Hair extensions are 100 percent real hair and come in curly or straight. Bitsiaras orders wavy extensions – 25 pieces to a bundle — because it seems to blend with everyone’s hair. They come in two lengths, long or short, which can be adjusted to a client’s preference. The color is matched to a client’s head using swatches that come with highlights or solid colors. “I cut and style it to blend in to look as much like as the natural hair as possible,” says Bitsiaras.
“I have an older client who has lost a lot of her hair,” says Bitsiaras. “The back is full but the sides are very sparse. I fill in the sides with 25 pieces to even out her little bob. She feels so much better.”
Extensions last 4 to 6 months before growing out and need to be removed at the salon. They typically sell for $200 a bundle and must be ordered in advance.
Hair extensions are especially popular with women who are recovering from chemotherapy while their hair grows back. “It gives them a style for that in-between stage,” says Bitsiaras.
“Women have been really happy with their extensions,” Bitsiaras says. “They call me the next day, telling me their husband didn’t even notice the difference. Some even say it changed their life.”
